A cyst is a sac which forms on or below the skin, containing fluid. Although cysts are generally harmless, they can develop into painful boils or abscesses. Furthermore, what may appear to be a cyst might well be something much more serious. It is never advisable to assume that any kind of lump is a cyst, as you may have a medical condition which requires treatment. While skin cysts do not generally hurt, if the cyst becomes infected it will become inflamed and way ooze pus which omits a foul smelling odor.
Epidermoid cysts usually form around areas from the chest up to the neck and face. However, this type of cyst can also develop around the genital area. The most likely sufferers of epidermoid cysts are young to middle-aged adults. There is no hereditary association with epidermoid cysts. Pilar cysts are those which develop around hair follicles. Women are more likely to develop pilar cysts and there is a hereditary association among sufferers. Chalazion, or meibomian cyst, are those which form on or around the eyelids and can cause pressure on the eyes resulting in discomfort and pain.
Causes and Symptoms of a Cyst
Some types of cysts run in families, whereas others can affect anyone. The cause of most common cysts are the clogging of the sebaceous glands or as a result of an infection. Cysts are shaped like domes and differ in size and will contain fluid which will ooze out of the center of the sac in some cases. Squeezing the cyst will also result in the discharge of fluid or pus. However, it is not advisable to squeeze a cyst as doing so can lead to infection or result in an existing infection becoming much worse.
