Tired of old acne treatments?
In a previous article, the new Dusa Blue light therapy was discussed for the treatment of actinic keratosis. However this new light therapy is also the latest product on the market for the treatment of acne vulgaris and acne scarring.
Acne is a common skin disorder that affects many people and age groups. The common causes of acne are overproduction of oil, overproduction of bacteria, and hormone changes. There are many great prescription treatment options available to all patients however the newest option on the market is Dusa Blue Light.
Photodynamic therapy is a non-invasive light treatment that involves using a light sensitizing solution as well as a blue light. PDT works for acne by shrinking the skin’s oil glands, which will then decrease oil production, for patients with more moderate to severe acne, PDT may also kill bacteria. Through these two methods, acne from mild to severe should have a great response with PDT. The sensitizing solution is applied to the face and left on for fifteen to sixty minutes. It is then activated by the blue light, which is treated for eight to ten minutes. There is no pain with either the solution or the light. Most patients will require two to three treatments at three week intervals.
There is minimal downtime with PDT therapy. One to two days following treatment your skin may appear red and you might have slight peeling. It is very important to remain indoors after treatment to protect your skin from the sun. Photodynamic therapy can be used in conjunction with other medical treatments.
There have been reports of fifty to seventy-five percent improvement and has been compared to the affects of Accutane treatment. PDT is a safe and effective treatment for acne as well as acne scarring. There are little to no side effects and minimal downtime. It is a great treatment option alone for acne or in conjunction with other medical options.
