2020 has negatively affected every person in America in one way or another. From food shortages, empty toilet paper aisles, and lockdowns, we have all felt the impact COVID-19 has caused us this year. Another way that millions of Americans have been affected is by the use of masks. Whether you are “pro-mask” or “anti-mask,” you’ve likely had to put one on at some point. “Mascne” is a new term that is being used to describe mask-induced acne, caused by wearing a face mask or covering for extended periods of time.

Mascne is triggered by the skin being covered and being subjected to excess heat, friction, and pressure that irritates the skin. Many athletes fight some form of mascne, which falls under the umbrella of acne mechanica. People who wear helmets, chin straps, and sweatbands often suffer from acne around the areas where these pieces of equipment rest on their skin. Sweat, oil, and bacteria build up around these areas, which leads to clogged pores that become inflamed. Dirty skin creates a breeding ground for acne in all forms: blackheads, whiteheads, cysts, pustules, and pimples.

While the state of Georgia does not have a mask mandate that requires all Georgians to wear masks, many people are choosing to wear them because they think that masks provide them with some protection. Many stores are also still requiring customers to wear masks, so there are many people dealing with mascne. Because we do not know how long mask-wearing will continue, Kayal Dermatology wanted to provide you with tips to keep your skin as clean and clear as possible.

  • Clean your face thoroughly before putting a mask on.
  • Always wear a clean mask.
  • Do not wear makeup underneath your mask.
  • Remove your mask as often as possible to allow your skin to breathe. Step outside in the fresh air, if possible.
  • Take a shower and cleanse your face and neck as soon as possible when you get home.

At Kayal Dermatology, we know that 2020 has been a doozy for most of us. We want to help you feel confident and provide you with treatment for your skin conditions. If you or a loved one is suffering from mascne, contact our practice today.

First time ever at a dermatology office! So I was a little nervous... But they have a very friendly staff and it was nice meeting PA Joel! Felt comfortable and he was informative & made me feel like I wasn’t the only person dealing with my issue. I can’t wait to see some results and get some relief!!

I’ve been going here awhile. I’ve got a few pesky issues, some due to my not allowing areas to completely heal, sins that prolongs my already glacier like speed healing! I really appreciate Dr. Kayal and Joel who combine to take of me and my family.

Michael V.

Was greeted upon my arrival, very nice waiting room, was taken back immediately. Very professional, caring and friendly staff. They want to help you. The PA Joel was very knowledgeable and knew exactly how to help me. I was given a prescription to address the problem. Will be back with other issues, keep up the good work.
