Have you ever looked at your hands and wished you could turn back time to take better care of your skin. Most people say the eyes show a woman’s age, however, the hands can also be very revealing. As we age our hands become damaged by the sun and form dark spots, they also lose volume over time, which causes a “sunken in ” appearance. There are many treatments for rejuvenation of the hands just as there is for the rest of our body. A few of these options include laser treatment, chemical peels, and soft tissue fillers.
Treatment for brown spots
Lentigines, also known as “liver spots,” are flat lesions which are caused by sun damage, and can be treated with a variety of options. Lasers are one of the more popular choices for these troublesome spots. The IPL (intense pulse light) laser procedure causes the brown spots to become irritated and slough off or lighten over time. The procedure is quifck and virtually painless. A few days after the procedure the areas treated will appear red, scaly, and sometimes darker than before the treatment. The brown spots will then peel off around a week after the treatment. There is no downtime with the laser procedure.
Chemical peels are also a great option for treating dark spots. This procedure involves placing a chemical on the skin for approximately ten minutes, during the procedure a slight stinging sensation may be felt. A few days following the treatment, the spots will become scaly and then lighten or slough off over the following days to weeks.
What about loss of volume?
When loss of volume is the main concern the best option is soft tissue fillers. Radiesse is a new soft tissue filler that can be used safely on the backs of the hands. The filler is injected into the areas where there is a loss of volume. Radiesse is injected in the office setting and only takes about an hour to perform. There is little to no downtime with the procedure, with mild bruising and soreness being the most significant side effects. A topical numbing cream can be applied prior to the procedure to minimize any pain. After the procedure the hands may appear red and slightly swollen, this affect will diminish over the following days. Radiesse last approximately one year and usually does not require touch ups throughout the year. The end result is a fullness to the back of the hands resulting in less prominent blue-gray veins and a less atrophic appearance.
